Nyasa BB march on, Kanguje haunts former club: Malawi Carlsberg Cup
Nelson Kangunje struck twice as Nyasa Big Bullets edged out Civo sporting Club out of the Carlsberg Cup.
The people’s team resurgence to top form following a miserable start to the season continued as early as 10 minutes into the first half with the former Civo midfielder playing behind Chiukepo Msowoya and Diverson Mlozi.
Despite playing better, Bullets could not find the back of the net as Civo’s defence looked steady up until halftime.
However, soon after recess, Kangunje got his first goal in account as a Bullets player from a rebound following a scramble in Civo’s 18-yard box. The visitors were left suprised with his goal celebration baring in mind the years he spent at the club before he left for Mozambique.
Patrick Thupi got the scores level a few minutes later following a fine move ochestrated by Joseph ‘Dudu’ Kachule. The visiting Civo supporters had a toiling afternoon as Kangunje scored his second midway the second half, this time connecting a lose ball from Mike Mkwate before chipping it cleverly pass the Civo goalkeeper.
The result was enough to send Bullets to the next stage of the competition with Civo bowing out.
Speaking to reporters, Bullets Caretaker Coach Elia Kananji praised the individual brilliance of Kangunje which he said was the difference on the day.
“We had a tough run for our money today. Civo were equally a good side and deserved to progress but we were on top. Perhaps, Kangunje made the difference and we are happy to have such talent in our books,” said the former Wanderers Coach.
For his part, Civo Coach Franco Ndawa praised his boys for what he referred to as fighting spirit.
“Credit should go to my players. We really fought the battle. Am happy because we are slowly improving and finding the formula. I have enough confidence in my players and hope to get a result in our next assignment,” Ndawa said.
In other round of 32 Carlsberg cuo results, Moyale Barracks beat Mwanza Boarder 2 nil with goals from Deus Mkutu and Chamuyeka Gwetsani.

In another all TNM super ledgue affair, Dwangwa United edged out Mzuni 9-8 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after regulation time.
The biggest casualty in the round of 32 so far is Azam Tigers who were ousted by Cobbe Barracks on post match penalties after a 2-all draw in regulation time.
