Celebrated sports journalist Garry Chirwa retained the Standard Knockout Football Cup print media award with Zodiak Broadcasting’s Mke Bango getting the award for  electronic media for the second year running.

Other awards went to television journalist Paul Kamanga of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation  and best photo-journalist was shared between Bobby Kabango of  The Nation and Bonex Julius of Daily Times.

Each winner received K200 000 (US$430) and a certificate.

The judging panel was led by Maclan Kanyang’wa, who is the head of journalism and media studies at the Malawi Polytechnic.

Other members of the panel were Ellard Manjawila, journalism lecturer at the Polytechnic, Mabvuto Kapyepye, author and managing director of Mlambe Consulting and Frank Phiri of FD Communications Limited who coordinated the judging exercise

Presenting the awards, Standard Bank chief financial officer Temwani Simwaka applauded the media for their support which she said has contributed highly to the success of the cup.

Simwaka said Standard Bank is proud to be associated with the media competition, which promotes excellence and objectivity in sports journalism in Malawi.

She said the judges “scrutinised every entry in detail and with a fair eye.”

According to Kanyang’wa, the quality of entries in this year’s competition was very high. He added the new categories of online and best photojournalist were highly competitive and the proliferation of local television meant that they were not dealing with traditional media as usual.

He said they separated “grain from chaff.”

I wish Patrick Simango, Sam Banda & Deitrich Fredrich were also given these awards. But some sports reporters such as Danger of Matindi FM, Francis Tchavi & Charles Chataza are a shame to the journalism profession. Sports news to them is Big Bullets and amachita kuwonetsera kuti they are Big Bullets supporters.

I agree that Patrick Simango is one of the best. His reporting is both entertaining and educative. His commentary in Chichewa is just a marvel to hear! He digs dipper and I like his selection of words and his application to sports. Next time also involve people like Professor Alfred Mtenje (a linguist) to be one of the judges. Otherwise Congratulations to all.
