Owners of Malawi Kung fu film disowns Chapeyama

Producers of the 82 minutes Malawian locally produced kung fu movie have disowned Saidi Rashiz Chapeyama who uploaded the film on social media and later claimed ownership of the production.

The Town Monger Movie

In different interviews Chapeyama claimed that the film, which has gone viral on social media attracting over three million viewers and positive reviews globally, was produced in Ndirande Township by a group linked to his Ndirawood Films.

However, the manager who is handling the affairs of the movie has clarified that the movie was produced in Lilongwe’s Area 36 and that the Kufewa Acrobatics who are behind the production have no links to Chapeyams.

“The screen rights to “The Town Monger Movie”, the script, the rights to the screenplay and underlying are under Kufewa Acrobatics and Hashavwint Studios and not any of the parties who released the video clips online,” said Dennis Imaan, General Manager for Determination Tourism a firm managing the Kufewa Acrobatics.

Imaan went on to explain how the group was started in 1999 as a five member acrobatics outfit with the aim of training and starring in different mind blowing accrobatic and martial arts stunts in the Townships of Lilongwe and perform at different events across the country and beyond as a means of earning a living.

He said it was in 2002 that the team started doing shows in the streets.

Imaan, however, said out of their life experiences in 2015 they thought of coming up with a low budget film, resulting into The Town Monger.

“We believe this is a new dawn for movie acting not only for Malawi but for the whole world. With 82 minutes of running time, this movie may just be what Malawi and Africa was waiting for,” said Imaan.

The Town Monger is an action packed movie revolving around two groups-one a gang of thugs while the other was on a mission to rescue street kids who were being used by the gang for pick pocketing and other illicit elands.

The other group would rescue the children to put them back in school, a development that did not please the gang of thugs prompting it to start hunting down the kids to take them back to the streets.

In the process there is a crash of the two groups and an action packed fight erupts with real kung fu stunts and acrobatics.

To action movie lovers, the fight is a thrill to watch and the skills displayed are a marvel showing rare talents coming from these first time movie actors.

The movie was shot, produced and directed by Shareef Atwab of Hashavwint Studios in Chinsapo Township in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe, according to Imaan.

Kufewa Acrobatics was formed in January, 1999 by Imaan Shaibu, Abdul Rashid Shaibu, Juman Kantunda, Alfred Hambali and Davison Geffrey and these are also the main characters in the film.

“The Town Monger Movie has been produced with an aim of coming up with a movie from Malawi which is of high quality action wise, important, educative, honest, thought provoking, profitable low-budget for home viewing, theatrical motion pictures and television programming to be experienced by a wide variety of audiences,” said Imaan.

There is no point in bashing Chapeyama here or there. NyasaTimes, both your articles have been misleading and demeaning. Go read the posts by Chapeyama again. Some of us have been following this issue since the video was posted on Watsup Malawi until it went viral. At no point did Chapeyama claim that this was his work. He only edited the video which was in very very poor standard as you might have heard the production took place in Mchesi. Kufewa Acrobatics owe Chapeyama and his page a great vote of thanks for helping them to publicize their movie. Imagine… Read more »

Chapeyama ndi munthu wa matama heavy. He wants to show off every time he comes before a crowd of people. I know the guy personally and he wants to live a life which he is not and always comes across as any subject matter expert. He might have worked with the group somehow but he always magnifies his potential everywhere and he is full stupid illusions.
Mahule too much kape uyu.

Government or Copyright society please protect this hard earned talent and narture it. These boys have been out of school and worked hard to reach thus far. We all know that. National Youth Council where are you.? Ministry of Youth where are you. This is your time to intervene. I remember Bingu asking ” why were the violent demos patronised mostly by the the youth.?” Ministry of Youth had no answer.
