PAC to summon DCs over MPs misappropriation of CDF fund

Malawi Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has said it will summon all district commissioners whose offices were concerned with the K80 million constituency development fund by some members of parliament.

Alekeni Menynai: MPs have no case to answer.

Chairman of PAC Alekeni Menyani said the parliamentary committee feels the members of parliament have no case to answer on the issue. Finance minister Goodall Gondwe told the last sitting of parliament that 20 members of parliament misappropriated K80 million in 16 councils.

“The members of parliament have no case to answer. The district commissioners have a case to answer because they are the government controlling officers,” he said.

He said the constituency development fund does not go straight into the legislators bank accounts but goes direct into the councils bank accounts.

“The district commissioners are responsible for any mess. We want to pin them down to find out what was there between them and the members of parliament,” said Menyani.

The graft busting body, the Anti-Corruption Bureau has moved in swiftly in some councils arresting some district commissioners and council officials suspected of embezzling public money, including the constituency development fund.
