Malawi Police in Phalombe district are keeping in custody a 33-year-old Word Alive Ministries International pastor, Moses Sauti Phiri for allegedly duping a ward councillor K15,000.00 through tricks.
Phiri posing as a State House Official, obtained money amounting to MK150, 000.00 from Promise Maliwata, 35, councillor for Swang’oma ward, police have disclosed.
The suspect, according to police, claimed to be Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s deputy advisor on Religious Affairs.
The incident happened between June 2014 and February this year at Nambazo village in the district.
”The suspect approached the councillor claiming he had been sent by the President to get money for insurance and other documentation for a motor vehicle which was at Toyota Malawi the Head of State has bought for the councillor,” explained Phalombe police Public Relations
Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi.
The unsuspecting ward councilor, Nkhwazi said, gave Phiri the money.
”When the victim saw that the arrangement was taking time and that the suspect was not giving convincing reasons for the delay in the delivery of the alleged motor vehicle from the Head of State, he sought Police assistance”.
Nkhwazi said Phiri who was arrested on 1st March, 2016, confessed to the law-enforcers to have duped the councillor.
Phiri hails from Tchauya village, T/A Makwangwala in Ntcheu.
He is expected to be charged of Personating a Public Officer contrary to Section 99 of the Penal Code.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
