Plot to burn Kamuzu Central Hospital: Simoleti Kachere arrested
Malawi Police has said they arrested owner of SK Security Guard services, Simoleti Kachere, before he could petrol bom Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) for failing to settle bills amounting to K4 million (US$9 592).
Lilongwe Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani confirmed that Kachere wanted to burn the hospital after being irked with the outstanding balance .
According to police spokesman, Kachere on January 4 set off for KCH with a gallon of petrol but his attempt was thwarted.
“When he came to the hospital, he started to chat up with one of his employees. We don’t know what they were talking about, but from nowhere, he chased the employee and threw some petrol on his body then he started heading to the accounts department,” Mushani said.
According to Mushani, a police officer, who was nearby, saw the commotion and stopped Kachere before he did any damage.
Police have pressed charges of with conduct likely to cause grievous harm and attempted arson. The crime carries a maximum sentence of 14 years.
He is currently on bail.
