Police arrest 20 over looting, property damage during demos

Malawi Police say they have arrested 20 suspects in connection with the looting and property damage which happened during the anti-Jane Ansah peaceful protests on Tuesday in Lilongwe.

National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera at least five vehicles were damaged and a number of shops looted and some property destroyed.

“Kambuku filling station at City Centre was vandalized, some houses in Area Six had their window panes smashed,” said Kadadzera.

He said the suspects would appear in court after all the investigations are through.

Organisers of the protests, the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) said the demonstrations continue Wednesday morning in Lilongwe despite some pockets of violence.

HRDC chairperson Timothy Mtambo urged the police to arrest any person caught perpetrating violence.

The current wave of protests ends on Friday and Mtambo said another wave of protests would be organised if the Malawi Electoral Commission  (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah fails to resign following the highly disputed May 21 election results.

Hopefully this is now a true number as last time they created a fake number to appease the master evil DPP! When well wishers went to the prison they only found a hand full. Leave Malawi alone it’s not your boysquarters that you should keep stealing tax payers money, your ‘DPP fun ‘must come to an end, light must outshine darkness.

I am always surprised that on many times when HRDC conducts demos Police is forefront reporting that such buildings are damaged Or certain vehicles are destroyed. Come dpp demos same kadadzera is quiet despite destruction caused for instance the recent beatings of Billy Mayaya which was live and circulated in the media.I have felt so sad with the way Police have taken up their form of reporting. Kadadzera is trying to please his superiors that he is busy reporting out as PRO but in the cause due to mostly false and biased kind of reporting has ruined the good police… Read more »

The case is coming to an end soon. It is so surprising to see the so called demonstrators chase the police knowingly sure that they have all the freedom to loot and vandalize peoples property. Will Mtambo and his HRDC compensate all these damaged property.Mtambo cannot do it in Blantyre, only the chewas and the tumbukas can entertain his rubbish for the sake of trying to seize power through force. This is not acceptable.Other tribes donnot neither favour Tumbuka nor Chewa rather to Yawo and Lomwe ,Sena Iclusive

These Demonstrations are achieving nothing but Looting and destruction. Mr Mtambo what have you achieved practically with these Demonstrations? If we count on the results of what ever you are doing is so adverse and saddening. These Demonstrations have produced, Deaths, Destruction of Property, looting and stealing of peoples property. Its unfortunate that this has affected much in Lilongwe and Mzuzu. Any strike, or Demonstration much achieve its purpose within a specified period, less than that its a flopped move. Mind you people are not sitting down and watching you parade, they are taking stock of their losses and when… Read more »

the demonstrators chased malawi police officers in order to be free to loot. They knew that MDF has no capacity to stop them once the protest has ended. I justice chikopa, once again approved this myself.
