Police arrest man for sexual assault of girl-child

Police in Rumphi have arrested 35 year old man f on a charge of sexual assault of a 7-year- old girl.

Rumphi Police Station spokesperson Victor Khamisi told Nyasa Times that the suspect, Richard Chunda who hails from Mzoma village, T/A Mwahenga, had sexually assaulted the girl on 11 April, 2012.

The suspect who is now under police custody will appear before court soon to answer charges of defilement contrary to section 138 of the penal code.

The victim (name withheld), is standard one pupil at Chivungulu FP school comes from Betera village, T/A Mwahenga in the district.

Khamisi said during the material day at around 13: 00 hrs, the suspect, who was coming from a drinking spree at Phwezi Trading Center found the girl playing alone at the house.

He said the suspect asked the girl to follow him and she obliged.

”After walking for a distance the suspect grabbed the girl by the hand and laid her down in a tobacco field where he defiled her,” said Khamisi.

Khamisi said after defiling the girl, he gave her K50 so that she should not reveal the ordeal.

However, when the girl reached home her elder sister quizzed her about her whereabouts and wondered why the girl was having problems in walking.

”The girl revealed that she was picked up by the suspected who had defiled her.”

The matter was reported to Village headman Vunda who asked members of the community policing to apprehend the suspect.

The girl was taken to Rumphi District Hospital for treatment.

Defilement attracts a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment with hard labour.
