Police arrest Nepman for illegal possession of a pistol
Malawi Police in Lilongwe on Wednesday arrested a 35-year-old musician Nepman (born Nappier Longwe) for being found in possession of an air pistol without lawful authority.
Police arrested Nepman after a video was seen circulating on social media in which the suspect used the weapon, which has the capacity to injure or disfigure a person, in his music video shooting.
According to Deputy Public Relations Officer for Central Region Police Headquarters, Inspector, Patrick Kasauka, the police made a follow up to find out if the suspect is authorized to have the weapon in his possession.
“Upon investigation, it was discovered that the suspect acquired the weapon outside the country and he did not register with firearm registry at National Police Headquarters upon his return,” he said.
According to the laws of Malawi (the Penal Code), section 81, it is an offence for any person to posses any offensive weapon without lawful authority or reasonable excuse or proof adding a person may be sentenced to pay a fine or may also receive a custodial sentence of about two years.
