Police raids lead to arrest of 6 ‘vicious’ gang members in Lilongwe

Police in Kanengo are keeping in custody 6 suspected criminals who were arrested in a sweeping exercise conducted in Area 50 following a series of armed robberies in surrounding areas.

Lilongwe Police publicist, Kingsley Dandaula, told Malawi News Agency (Mana) that the 6, whose ages range from 16 to 34, were apprehended in an exercise conducted by a special Criminal Investigation Team set up at the station to flush out notorious criminals in the city.

“We have set up a special team of investigators and following a series of reports on robberies with violence and burglary in Areas 49, 25, 18, 47 and surrounding areas, the team carried out an operation  Thursday night and apprehended the six men in Area 50 following tip-offs from the public,” explained Dandaula.

He disclosed that some of the suspects have already been linked to recent robberies in some of the mentioned areas.

Dandaula identified the six suspects as Boniface Mandala, 27, and Jonathan Malunga 16, both from Mwanyimba Village T/A Chauma, Dedza; Miliyasi Wisdom, 34, of Khalapathumba Village, T/A Malenga, Ntchisi; and David Kanzonga, 20, of Tonge Village, T/A Khongoni, Lilongwe.

The other two are Chipiliro Kamoto, 20, from Kamoto Village, T/A Makhuwira, Chikwawa, and 24-year-old Luka Sambani from Nyadza Village, T/A Santhe, Kasungu.

The men have been charged with burglary and robbery with violence contrary to respective Sections 309 and 301 of the Penal Code, according to Dandaula.

He added that the six suspects were on the ‘wanted’ list of Kanengo Police and that they would be transferred there for further investigations.

From end February, a spate of armed robberies swept through Areas 49, 50, and 25 where dozens of armed men terrorized residents and community policing men by hacking and robbing them of whatever they had in their possession.

  10. That is the way to go if you want to win the war against crime. Be conducting raids when least expected. raid markets, bars, taverns etc. Criminals are all over.

  12. Good work our police. However, these roberies is just a symptom of a serious problem. If you look at the age of these robbers, its unfortunate that they are all energetic young guys. The root cause is lack of employment. Malawi is the only nation that does not do enough for its citizens. University yathu cannot accomodate all deserving students ndipo achinyamata ambiri akungokhala. MYP imkatola anyamata ngati awa to learn ntchito zamanja. Our systems have nothing to offer kwa achinyamata ngati awa. Imagine, how many students who finished MSCE frm 2010 to date koma sanapeze mwayi wa university? Again retirement age is high. Anyamata akungokhala mmanyumbamu ndiye ndi awa akubawa. Boma likanaganizapo za anthu awa, alipo ambiri zedi. Invest in these youths. Otherwise we are raising a nation of robbers.

  29. Congratulations for a job well done MPS. work on arresting the remaining members of the gang, akumayenda 20+ anthu amenewa. May I also take this opportunity to request the commander in chief of the armed forces of the country in corroboration with the army commander to make use of our idle army soldiers. deploy them to patrol duties every night from 10 PM. anybody found walking on the streets at that time is a criminal. let them shoot, manhandle, etc the criminals. we will not complain for now. Lets promote human rights of law abiding citizens before we talk about rights of criminals who are busy killing, wounding, harassing, raping, etc law abiding citizens in the confines of their own homes.   31. Their ages talk volumes on Unemployment. Government needs to do something for the Youth. This is a productive group that is supposed to be engaged in the county’s development.
    My suggestion is that we should keep this age group in farming activities. Govt should abandon giving subsidized fertilizers to the old and feeble people and divert its attention and funds to this age group. We have so many idle and abandoned General and Press Agriculture farms that can be activated using the readily available human resource. These people can be producing a lot of maize, pigs, chickens, cattle, sheep and cattle.

    Remember that our Former Head of state Elson Bakili was once at MYP where he learnt leadership. Those of us who were there remember the chickens, eggs that the MYP wereproducing at Amalika, Stella Maris, Lisandwa etc.
