Malawi police have fired teargas into the  Malawi Congress Party (MCP) headquarters in Lilongwe and also at its supporters who took to the streets to march against “fraudulent” results of the May 21 Tripartite Elections.

Nyasa Times understands that at the time the police fired teargas into the party head office, MCP leader Lazarus Chakwera was inside meeting US Ambassador Virginia Palmer.

The opposition are challenging Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) declaration of  “not credible” May 21 Tripartite Elections results sheets altered using correction fluid, Tippex.

MCP and UTM Party, whose presidential candidates Lazarus Chakwera and Saulos Chilima, respectively, finished second and third in the official results MEC announced, have moved the courts to nullify the elections, citing irregularities.

The quasi-religious group Public Affairs Committee (PAC) said in its analysis of the polls that the results management process lacked credibility, especially in the wake of revelations of use of Tippex.

The European Union Election Observer Mission also faulted the results management system.

Meanwhile, Garton Kamchedzera, a professor of law at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, observed that MEC acted as a competitor in the election instead of being a referee.

He said in quotes reported in the press that MEC’s own admission through chairperson Jane Ansah and chief elections officer Sam Alfandika that no Tippex was supplied was reason enough to reject any document tampered with using the correction fluid.

Kamchedzera said MEC should have been alert on the source of Tippex, whose use was widespread across the 5 002 polling stations nationwide.

He said: “Election officers who sent ‘Tippexed’ documents were assured that their documents would be accepted.

“Those documents were not credible. By accepting the documents, MEC was accepting to use documents and records that were not credible; and then taking them, assigning the label of credibility to something that was not credible.”

  2. This issue of tippex has been blown out of proportion. Ideally, MEC advised its officers to put the figure, then write it using words on the form. For me the few forms I saw had tipex used to correct the figures not the writings in words. So if indeed those figures were doctored using tipex, the we would also see the correction fluid in the written words. And more over party monitors were there wen tipex was being used to correct the figures and they approved those figures. And by the way, if you count the forms with tipex use, do they even constitute 10% of ballot papers? MCP can not win this case because it lacks merit. Olo mukwiye olo kunditukwana a MCP, but this is my verdict and painful truth to you.

      1. Scar, what Optomus is saying is that police fired tear gas in an area where USA diplomat was meeting leader of an opposition party. That act alone may anger “Uncle Sam” and that may trigger verbal tirade from USA officials. That in itself would not be good diplomatically to our country as well as USA. if you do not know, Americans view such treatment very seriously. Lets hope an apology follows from the guy who leased the teargas canister …

  17. If Reverend Chakwera truly is a man of God, he will stop this right now before it escalates into bloodshed. DPP has been duly re-elected, President Mutharika has been given a mandate to continue his term for another 5 years before handing over power to the next one. Fellow Malawians where is there a problem in that? Malawi is a peaceful country and no African government is perfect. Even in America,Europe,Asia there are no perfect governments.DPP is on the right track,Malawi is on the right track.Even if we are going slowly but still we will get there. Do you honestly want to say that if either Chakwera or Chilima become president tomorrow they will not hire their friends or relatives to govt positions? They won’t use state funds to upgrade their lifestyles? That they will fix Malawi overnight? Chakwera needs to accept defeat so that the country doesn’t come to a complete standstill.
