Politician Kalazi-Mbewe dies after losing battle with lung cancer
A Lilongwe based businessman cum politician, Simon Kalanzi-Mbewe died at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) on Tuesday evening after after losing his battle with lung cancer.
According to his elder son, Patience Kalanzi-Mbewe, his father complained of stomachache and was later diagnosed of lung cancer at KCH recently.
“While receiving treatment at the hospital, My father could not make it and succumbed to the disease,” he said.
“ It’s with great sadness that he has died,” said the grief stricken son.
He said his body will be taken from his house in Area 47 to his home village in Mayani, Traditional Authority (T/A) Tambala in Dedza District on Thursday afternoon for burial which will take place on Friday.
As a politician, he said, Kalanzi-Mbewe joined politics way back during Multi-Party democracy. He served in the United Democratic Front (UDF) as a Deputy Regional Governor, in Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as Regional Governor for the Centre (during late Professor Bingu Wa Mutharika era) and he joined People’s Party (PP) as a National Campaign Director.
Recently, he re-joined DPP and was yet to be re-introduced to the party members at a political rally scheduled for Lilongwe, he said.
Born on September 29, 1959, Kalanzi-Mbewe is survived by a wife and four children.
