Blantyre Magistrates Court has sentenced a 25-year-old Pork seller to 12 years imprisonment with hard labour for rape.
Wellington Govati a resident of Chatha village in Chilobwe, Blantyre raped an 18-year-old Chimwankhunda Community Day Secondary School form one student on 14th October, 2014.
Govati who pleaded not guilty to the rape charge was arrested on 21st January this year after he had been on the run for three months.
According to Police prosecutor sub-Inspector, Victor Nachuma, Govati raped the victim after he threatened her with a knife.
”On this day the victim was on her way home from school when she met the accused who had a knife; he dragged her to his house while threatening to kill her if she dared to shout for help,” explained sub-Inspector, Nachuma.
Govati is said to have locked the victim in his house and repeatedly raped her before she was set free.
”He raped her five times. The matter was reported to Chilobwe police on the same day but the accused had been on run until January this year.”
Govati owned a Pork butchery at Green Corner along Chikwawa road.
He hails from Chikavumbwa village T/A Kwataine, Ntcheu and was charged with rape under Section 133 of the Penal Code.
