PP need to engage other parties, says analyst DD Phiri

Malawi’s renowned historian and economic expert Desmond Dudwa Phiri (DD Phiri) says President Joyce Banda’s Peoples Party (PP) remains a weak party hence a strong need to engage other political parties.

DD Phiri however commended President Banda for the recent appointment of people in various top positions without looking at political backgrounds.

The Office of the President and Cabinet announced on Tuesday that the president has appointed John Tembo Junior-Son to leader of opposition John Tembo as Malawi’s deputy ambassador in Britain.

According to DD Phiri, the appointment of John Tembo Junior is a milestone to National Government of Unity (NGU).

“Madam Joyce Banda’s party is very weak in parliament so it is better to work with other parties” said DD Phiri while agreeing for a government of national unity.

On the other hand,  DD Phiri suggest that it is not proper for a ruling party like PP to have a majority in parliament,  expressing fears of losing focus and shooting down some important bills in the August House.

The veteran historian and economic analyst also revealed that the government of Banda is in the right track citing the restoration of diplomatic ties with Britain and other neighbouring countries as good examples of change.

He said Britain has strong confidence in the current president that is why they did not hesitate to amend the spoiled relationship between Malawi and Britain.

He also said Banda was not part and parcel of the previous government of the late Bingu wa Mutharika which spoiled the good relationship with Malawi’s colonial mother-Britain by chasing the former British Envoy to Malawi Fergus Cochrane Dyet.

DD Phiri said the sour relationship with Britain also affected the local political arena.

Also commenting on the appointment of Tembo Junior, University of Malawi Chancellor College Political analyst Augustine Magolowondo says it is a move to gain support from the opposition and other quarters.

Magolowondo downplayed speculations that the appointment symbolizes a Government of National Unity (GNU) saying GNU involves different political parties not an individual like Tembo Jnr.

Meanwhile several commentators are praised Banda for making appointments based on merit and without looking at political or regional background.
