Prison officers pounce on MK1.5m funding

By Andrew Nyayah, Nyasa Times

Some unscrupulous Prison Officers at the Central Region Prison Office led by Assistant Commissioner of Prisons,  Robert Sambakusi , have turned government monthly funding of MK1.5 million from Treasury into personal use by allocating each other  non- existent  allowances and false claims, Nyasa Times can reveal.

“For instance, they indicate on claim forms that they had bought firewood but they use Prisoners to fetch tree stumps for use as firewood. They are corrupt,” said our source.

He also said when funding is received, the Officers and all support staff at the regional offices connive by filling in Claim Forms purporting to have worked outside the station in that month when in fact they have not.

They also claim to have bought accessories for prisons such as soap, salt, disinfectants among others.

The practice has compromised some operations at some prisons in the region such as Byanzi, Kachere and Ntchisi.

“Some Prison Warders are owed allowances going back as far as 2009 and each time we ask about our money, they tell us there is no funding. They have stopped buying meat and soap for prisoners.”

But Sambakusi refused to comment on the allegations saying he is not accountable to the media.

“I have nothing to explain to you,” he said.
