Prophet Bushiri ‘goes deeper’ in slander, MP sues

Member of Parliament for Dowa East, Bauleni Manna, has launched a lawsuit against Malawi’s renowned man of God, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the ‘go deeper’ fame for allegedly smearing a defamation of character on the lawmaker’s person, Nyasa Times has learnt.

Lawyer for the legislator, Gift Nankhuni, lodged the summons on Thursday through Lilongwe High Court, alleging that the self-styled Prophet publicly prophesized on national broadcaster, MBC TV that a woman – Taonga Jamali-  had aborted his two months pregnancy.

In the summons, seen by Nyasa Times, lawyer Nankhuni argues that that the broadcast of the alleged prophecy on 17th July 2012 on the national television was a “personal vendetta” after Jamali had warned him that she will deal with him after she featured in one of his music videos.

Jamali was employed by Bushiri as his secretary.

Bushiri: Dragged to court

Nankhuni plans to play the recording of the television programme in court as part of evidence.

In the recording, Bushiri is quoted claiming that he had mentioned the MP’s music name of Dr. Cloud to prove to him that he was a Man of God, accusing the lawmaker of not believing in his prophetic powers.

Manna is said to have instructed his lawyer to file a lawsuit, claiming the TV programme “caused him distress, anguish, shame, humiliation, embarrassment and public ridicule.”

The MP complains that Bushiri’s comments were utterly untrue and unreasonably founded or held. He also alleges that the programme subjected him into mockery, disrepute or contempt and that his self-respect and standing in the society has diminished as a result of the broadcast slurs.

In the lawsuit, which Manna is claiming undisclosed millions of Kwachas; Jamali is named as first defendant while the clairvoyant Bushiri, is named as the second defendant.

Bushiri Ministries are third defendant, Enlightened Christian Gathering Church and MBC TV is the fourth and fifth defendant, respectively.

This is not the first time that Prophet has court controversy in the public domain; he was encrypted in a sex scandal in which a young school girl took him to the cleaners claiming the man of God had impregnated her.

Brenda Phiri alleged that Bushiri made her pregnant, and that the prophet asked her to abort.

Bushiri vehemently repudiated the claims as false and labelled them as the work of the devil.

The case is still in court but halted on technicalities.

Zodiak Broadcasting Services (ZBS) recently claimed Bushiri lied to his congregation at Masintha ground in Lilongwe when he said a reporter from the radio was at his prayer gathering after being queried about finances.
