Pundits wonder Malawi’s next musical in BBA Stargame

Big Brother Africa (BBA) Stargame may not just have youthful Malawian pair cousins Nafe and Wati amongst its competitors for the US$300,000 end jig, but is also ‘searching’  for the next musical outfit to entertain fans during one of the eviction ceremonies.

During the last BBA, Malawi was represented by the performance of R’n’B star Maskal who played his chart topping Udalire, CV ya B and Hey to the liking of the foreign fans in Johannesburg, South Africa. Acts like Nyau King Tay Grin have also had a stint at the evictions years back.

Listed for possible Stargame Performance now are five hot and growing acts.

Armstrong: Tipped to get the nod this year

“This year one wonders who has the qualities to grace the stage at BBA: Star Game. We assessed various artists who we think would be likely choices,” says Paul Kampezeni of Macmdubz in his Facebook post in the group, Nafe and Wati in BBA Stargame – Vote Wisely.

With odds against each artist, he says Armstrong of Nde’feyo music company has a 2 to 1 chance of making it to Biggie’s entertainment stage, probably as his album ‘Without Your Love’ seems to be making it big currently.

“With his recent Brb Mixtape Launch, Nde’feyo’s Armstrong has risen to great heights with his incredible vocals. The R’n’B/pop artist has television and radio singles out played across the country. Armstrong stands a great chance of performing at BBA.,” analyses Macmdubz. Armstrong’s churning includes Sinditha Kumvesta and Hey.

On second position is Piksy of Atumwi duo. His album Unamata is buoying the artist to another level after Sendeza.

A ‘…hip hop/soul artist Piksy (also Nde’feyo) has been at the centre of interest since his first hitSendeza, says Macmdubz of the artist whose featuring role in Maskal’s CV ya Bo helped loft the track.

“This year he has shown great progress and improvement with his latest instalment of singles likeUnamata … Piksy is unique for his style and technique, fusion of the local language (Chichewa) and English. With all this Piksy remains relevant and consistent which also makes him another favourite.”

Awesome Rina, the sweet but challenging voice of female music in Malawi’s lady rapdom, has her track, Moment For Life to rely on. She features August, another hot mouth!

Since releasing her debut album Fame Academy in 2011, Macmdubz says she has gone further to release UndeRated: The Mixtape which has enjoyed a great deal of radio play and internet traffic.

“Rina remains to be the only identifiable female rapper in Malawi. Even with that fact aside the Beat-box Music lyricist has great qualities to compete against leading Malawian music acts. She also has a great chance as there have been few female acts representing Malawi at BBA,” goes the analysis. She would make Malawi’s first lady president, Joyce Banda, proud as she pushes for women’s emancipation!

Kwacha is Sonye’s tramp card. An R’n’B sensation, claims Macmdubz, would have been top of the list but due to his current inactivity, he is placed fourth favourite.

“Sonye is a multi-talented artist who stands out like a sore thumb. Apart from topping charts with his singles; Tabwela, Mr. Captain and Kwacha, the Baseline hit-maker has produced various hit singles for top Malawian artists such as, Young Kay, Barry One, Tay Grin and Theo Thomson and Maskal. Sonye would be an idea pick but he faces great competition from the artists mentioned above,” says the cheeky outfit.

Lastly, Gwamba, and not Gwanda! Uses his Kale Langa featuring Black Star to try and maze his way into the BBA glitter world. He is described as one who would deserve an award like Rookie of the Year.

“Gwamba has rapidly excelled with his work rate, catchy punch lines and comical style flow. The Immaculate MC has some what of a chance to be considered a contender as he is getting massive radio play and requests,” concludes the search for Malawi’s next act at Africa’s real life hot show known for great surprises.

Macmdubz believes the shortlist above is roughly the candidates for the BBA Star Game performers based on a survey it conducted. How? Nobody knows.

But whatever the case, one can fall for this sketchy wishful thinking, particularly when it ends by encouraging Malawians to keep Alinafe and Watipaso, both 22 and from the capital city, Lilongwe, in the house.

Meanwhile Macmdubz encourages fans can support BBA contestants Nafe  and Wati:www.bigbrotherafrica.dstv.com/Profile/1861/Nafe.html

All fingers are crossed!
