Pupil commits suicide in Malawi after being rebuked for fighting

A 14-year-old standard six pupil at McAlpine Primary School in Nkhata Bay on Tuesday committed suicide after he had been rebuked for fighting, police have said.

According to Nkhata Bay police spokesperson, Ignatius Esau, the boy, identified as Kondwani Manda, of Chimbano Village, Traditional Authority MalengaMzoma in the district, had picked up a fight with another pupil at the school.

Esau said Manda’s parents believe he took his own life after they reprimanded him for the altercation on Monday.

On Tuesday morning, Esau said, the deceased bid his parents farewell as he left for school, but instead he went into a nearby bush where he took his life.

“According to statements given to police investigators, Kondwani hanged himself about 200 metres from his parents’ home. His body was found late in the afternoon,” said Esau.
