Police identified the owner of the mangoes as Joyce Lungu aged 54 who stays near Ngwangwa F.P School in the same district.

Balaka Police Assistant Public Relations Officer (PRO) Gerald Sumaili told Nyasa Times that Police understands that the children had a tendecy of trespassing at Lungu’s residence where they usually pluck
mangoes on their way or in return from school.

He said this did not go well with the owner and in anger, on Friday she threatened that she will take unspecified action towards everyone who had eaten her mangoes if they dont go to apologise and pay a fine of K500.00 each.

Upon the children reporting to their parents, this prompted them to report the matter to Police in case something happens to any of their children.

The children were over 50 in number.

“The woman admitted that she indeed issued a warning because she was tired with the behaviour of the children despite warning them several times and some parents went to apologise and paid the K500.00 and the children were given water to drink by the owner of the mangoes” Sumaili told Nyasa Times.

“But the matter has been resolved through police and the woman assured the parents it was just a threat and nothing will happen to their children and she has since returned the money to those who already
paid to bail out their children” he said.

The Balaka Police Publicist said the water that was given to children has been sent to Balaka District Hospital for laboratory tests and if in any way contains any dangerous substance, the law will take its
course.

The woman was to be charged with a conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

She hails from Mtekongoma Village, T/A Mbelwa in Mzimba district.
