Roads Authority closes Limbe-Mkando-Chisitu road

Officials from Roads Authority (RA) have announced the closure of Limbe-Mkando-Chisitu Road (Moo4) from Monday until Wednesday, November 23 2022 to allow for maintenance works of Thuchila Bailey Bridge.
In a statement released on Monday, the RA is advising motorists travelling between Limbe and Chisitu to use the alternative Limbe-Thyolo-Muloza Road (Moo2).
Roads Authority spokesperson Portia Kajanga said in an interview that within the given time frame, the authority will replace deteriorated timber on the bridge with fresh ones.
She said: “We have closed the road temporarily because we are maintaining the bridge by replacing the old timber with fresh timber that will make the bridge safe for everyone to use.”
On Sunday, a woman was injured at Nkando Bridge after she slipped and fell into the river due to the poor state of the bailey bridge.
Mulanje Police Officer-in-Charge Edwin Magalasi confirmed the incident and identified the victim as Charity Mughogho, who works at Thuchila Health Centre under Partners In Hope.
She was referred to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for further medical treatment.
Meanwhile, vehicles have stopped using the dilapidated bridge and are instead using a detour closer to the bridge as water levels are very low.
