Rumphi teacher jailed 12 years IHL for sexually assaulting schoolgirl, 9

Rumphi First Grade Magistrate Court Monday sentenced a 22–year-old primary school teacher to 12 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for indulging in sexual activity with a nine-year-old girl.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Michael Paulino told the court that Christopher Mwansambo defiled the lass on the night of March 18, 2017 at Kanakulera Village, when she was on her way to her home from a football match.

“The suspect cheated the victim that her parents phoned him to escort her to her home but they should pass by his house first where he sexually abused her before escorting her home.

“When she reached her home she refused to eat supper as she was feeling pain. But upon being asked by her parents she revealed that she had been sexually assaulted by the teacher,” Mwansambo said.

When Mwansambo was confronted, he denied the matter and was reported to police at Livinstonia who arrested the suspect.

They charged him with the offence of defilement contrary to section 138 (1) of the Penal Code.

Paulino pleaded with presiding Magistrate Cuthbert Phiri to impose a stiffer sentence to the suspect for disgracing the teaching profession.

He observed that teachers are there to teach the girl child not to defile them saying they are custodians of the children just as parents.

“The suspect planned to commit the offence hence he ordered other learners who were with the victim to go so that he should remain alone with the victim,” Paulino said.

Magistrate Phiri sentenced Mwansambo to 12 year IHL and this would deter would be offenders in engaging themselves in to such acts

Mwansambo hails from Mkandapachuma Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwalweni in Rumphi District.
