Scorchers vs Bullets? Gangata proposes blockbuster friendlies against Malawi’s biggest clubs ahead of World Cup

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Alfred Gangata has floated a mouth-watering proposal for the Malawi Scorchers to take on domestic giants Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers in warm-up friendlies, as part of the team’s preparations for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

Gangata has proposed that the Scorchers should play a friendly match against either Big Bullets or Mighty Wanderers and other international teams before departing for Brazil.

Speaking during a welcome breakfast hosted by National Bank at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe, Gangata said the proposed matches would give the national women’s team a crucial opportunity to assess its readiness and sharpen its preparations before jetting off to South America.

The minister suggested the Scorchers could also benefit from facing international opposition as they continue building towards the tournament.

‘It is important for the team to test its capabilities before travelling. Playing against teams such as Big Bullets, Mighty Wanderers and other international sides would give the players the necessary preparation,’ Gangata said.

The minister also used the occasion to urge the players to value and appreciate the outpouring of support they have received from Malawians in recent weeks.

He acknowledged the financial rewards and other assistance being showered on the squad by well-wishers and sponsors, saying the support was a clear demonstration of the nation’s belief in the team’s ability to succeed on the global stage.

Gangata encouraged the players to repay that faith through commitment, discipline and strong performances when it matters most.

Should the proposed friendlies against the country’s two biggest clubs go ahead, they would offer the Scorchers valuable competitive preparation – while also giving fans up and down the country the chance to see their heroes in action one last time before they depart for Brazil.
