Second Music Malawi Awards preps underway

Preparations for the Second Edition of the Music Malawi Awards (Muma Awards) are now underway according to a statement released by MediaCorp Limited and Trocadero Consulting the organisers of the awards.

Inaugurated in 2014 as the Music Association of Malawi Music Awards (Mamma), the awards have now been changed and rebranded to Annual Music Malawi (Muma) Awards to reflect the overall mission and vision of the Awards, according to a statement from the organisers.

“Despite this change the Muma Awards will continue to set the pace as the premier outlet for honoring achievements in the local music industry and supporting local musicians to realize their full potential and dreams,” said Bright Sonani, Second Annual MUMA Awards public relations and communications manager.

Sonani said the mission of the MUMA Awards, which will now be an annual event, is to positively impact on the growth of the local music industry through recognizing, encouraging, nurturing and supporting overall professional excellence and the best of Malawi’s local music talent.

He said: “Our vision is to create a rich legacy of Malawian music; see growth in the industry; cultivate and enhance professional excellence; support and encourage talent; create greater appreciation for local music; create new opportunities for local musicians; create independent musicians who are able to sustain their lives; and bring awareness on the plight of local musicians and their families.

“The initiative looks forward to establishing itself as the pre-eminent music advocacy and outreach institution in Malawi.”

Sonani said since the inaugural awards held in January 2014, the team has been working flat out to ensure a flawless process in this edition whose impact he said promises to be bigger than the last one.

“This year we have assembled an independent team of music experts as judges to oversee the processes from nomination, voting and the declaration of winners. In the coming weeks we will announce the dates for the official launch of the Second edition. It is during this launch that our major partners, the Judging Panel and the nominees will be unveiled,” Sonani said.

He said during the launch the organisers will also advise the public on the various channels to be used for them to vote in each category.
