Second round crop estimate survey projects increase in tobacco production

A report of the second round crop estimate survey for the 2023/24 farming season has projected a 17 percent increase in tobacco production from the volume produced in 2023.

In a statement released by Tobacco Commission(TC) on 2 April 2024, the report projects a production of 140 million kilogrammes of the leaf which is an increase comparing with 120 million kilogrammes which was sold in
2023.

The statement also stated that first round of the crop estimate survey
which was done in January 2024, had shown a 21 percent increase in 2024 tobacco production from that of 2023.

“The latest report attributes decrease in the projected production from 146 million kilogrammes to 140 million kilogrammes to prolonged dry spells in the most parts of the country and poor establishment and performance of some Dark Fire Cured tobacco in the northern region,” reads part of the statement.

The report of the first nation-wide survey attributed the projected improved production to increased hectarage due to good prices in 2023, increased number of growers, increased sponsorship and availability of inputs.

Tobacco estimate surveys in Malawi are conducted by industry players and are coordinated by Tobacco Commission.
