All set for Malawi athletics elections

Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) will hold its long awaited Annual General Meeting at Livingstone Beach Hotel in Salima in which top on the agenda is the election of new office bearers.

Malawi athletes awaits new leadership
The elections would take place after twice being cancelled as in November last year Malawi National Council of Sports postponed after noticing glaring irregularities concerning the Constitution.

Sports Council also queried the association on the financial report for the year 2016 which was presented by Treasurer Irene Luka for not being audited by any audit firm.

AAM President Godfrey Phiri is likely to go for a second term of officer with nobody challenging his controversy-ridden administration, former Athletics Association of Malawi General Secretary Haxon Chapasa, is vying for the vice-president if Northern Region Athletics chairman who is a long former distance  runner.

Incumbent controversial General Secretary Frank Chiyembeya face a tough test against Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA) General Secretary Blackson Malamula, while Charles Sent Banda who is the incumbent President Vice-President has opted to contest for the position of Vice-General Secretary which is currently vacant after Irene Luka was promoted to the position of Treasurer following the sudden death of Captain Morgan Tembo, who was son to former Malawi Congress Party legendary leader John Ungapake Tembo.

On the position of Teasurer the incumbent Irene Luka faces Southern Region Athletics Association Christopher Kabwazi who is also MASSA Treasurer while on Vice-Treasurer there is long distance runner .

However the elections still faces some challenges as there are sticking issues such as alleged gross financial mismanagement, Constitutional flaws, irregularities on the voting rights.

Sports Council which called off the elections is demanded a comprehensive and audited financial report not only for the year 2016 but also the past four years since they assumed the office under controversial circumstances.

It remains to be seen how the incumbent committee would be able to provide audited accounts for the entire term of office when they failed to do for one year, 2016.

This will also be the first time for the executive committee to hold an Annual General Meeting since they were elected into office in contravening Constitutional requirement.

During their term of office the executive committee made history for bad reasons for being the first ever to have their annual grant suspended by International Athletics Associations Federation (IAAF) for failing to provide how they used the money during the preceding year.
