Sex romps rampant at Chanco

University of Malawi’s Chancellor College (Chanco) has been registering many sexual exploits since the class boycott by lecturers over academic freedom impasse with d 39 pregnancies in one academic year (2010/2011) alone, according to Director of Women Affairs Elsie Nliwasa.

Nliwasa told the Weekend Times that this development has forced the College to resort to distributing condoms to male and female students as a measure to deal with the situation.

“We are now putting condoms in all hostel toilets so that students can have unlimited access to them because some students are shy to approach hall representatives to get the condoms,” she told the paper.

She attributed the problem to lack of knowledge on contraceptive methods among the students.

Another student, who opted for anonymity confided with Nyasa Timesthat sex among students was rampant at the campus due to idleness as they are not learning.

Chanci female student admit, so many pregnancies

“Since we came here, we have not been learning as a result students indulge in sexual romps as most of the times we are free,” she said.

She also went on to reveal that students have reached at an extent of having sex in bathrooms, toilets and sharing rooms.

However, Assistant Registrar responsible for students welfare Ellias Chizimba quashed the figures on 39 pregnancies in one academic year, describing them as unrealistic.

“I can’t deny that there are pregnancies but to say the figure is 39 is an exaggeration,” he told Weekend Times.

Nyasa Times also found out that students were sending more suggestive text messages and sending sexually explicit images to each other.

The Chanco students have not been attending classes despite its reopening on July 4.

President Bingu wa Mutharika who is also Chancellor of University of Malawi (Unima) closed Chanco and the Polytechnic, another Unima constituent college on April 1 after government and the academic staff disagreed over the question of academic freedom.
