Sexual offences, rape figures decrease in Phalombe – Malawi Police

Law enforcers in Phalombe district has seen a decrease in sexual offences crimes,  with the district registering 40 cases in 2016 comparing to 46 in 2015.

Sex crimes have decreased in Phalombe

 Police records indicate that out of the 40 cases reported during 2016, defilements were 36, two cases were rape cases, one incest case and indecent assault.

 “During the year in question, 13 convictions were secured at Phalombe First Grade Magistrate court. Four cases were discharged under Section 81 (a) of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Code. Five cases were withdrawn by complainants and one case was diverted by the district social welfare office. 11 cases are still under investigation,” disclosed Phalombe police Public Relations Officer, Augustus Nkhwazi.

Nkhwazi said out of the 46 cases reported in 2015, eight convictions were secured in court whereby four cases were discharged under Section 247 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Code.

 “We had one acquittal and one case was withdrawn by the complainant. The rest of the cases are still under investigation.”

 Meanwhile, police in the district are conducting meetings with members of the public to raise awareness on the need to end sexual assault incidents.
