Shake up in Malawi Police: Deputy IG fired, CID head Mtekama demoted

Information reaching Nyasa Times indicates Deputy Inspector General (IG) of Police responsible for operations Finley Binali has been fired.

Binali was one the two deputy inspector generals of police which president Joyce Banda’s administration appointed soon after Banda elevated commissioner Loti Dzonzi to the position of Inspector General of Police.

Police sources said this is part of the major shakeup in the Malawi Police Service which has also seen head of Criminal Investigations Department Bob Mtekama relieved of his duties as CID head.

Mtekama has since transferred to Phalombe Police station where he is expected to work as officer in charge.

Willie Mwaluka: Asked to resign

“Former police spokesperson Willy Mwaluka had been asked to resign to pave way for ongoing investigations into the death of Polytechnic student Roberts Chasowa.” says the source.

According to the sources, Mwaluka is allegedly connected with Chasowa’s death for the part he played on the fake postmortem which showed that Chasowa committed suicide.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Rhoda Manjolo confirmed that Mtekama has been transferred to Phalombe police station but expressed ignorance on the firing of Binali and fate of Mwaluka.

“It’s true that Mtekama has been transferred to Phalombe police station. In fact it is normal procedure in Police. Nothing has changed its has nothing to do with demotion. In fact he will be head of all the police in the whole Phalombe district,” she said.
