Shariff, Mkwanda shine in Sparc Systems golf

Senior golfers Bashir Shariff and Magaret Mkwanda carried the day during a golf tournament that was sponsored by Sparc Systems at Blantyre Sports Club on Saturday.

The two were among a field of 60 enthusiastic golfers that took part in the competition that saw Shariff scored 87 gross and net 65 to become the men’s champion.

Mkwanda, a seasoned lady golfers, scored a gross of 103 and 73 net to emerge champion.  Her runner-up with Connie Karuku who posted gross 95 and net 77 while Doreen Kavala was third.

The men’s runner-up was Donbell Mandala with gross 84 and net 69 while former Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) Gabriel Kambale, playing off handicap 4, came third with 84  gross and net 65.

Shariff said he enjoyed his triumph having won Chip in Masters earlier in the day.

“I used my experience and it helped me shine,” he said.

On her part the ladies winner, Mkwanda said it was a memorable victory for her having failed to win in previous tournaments.

“Previously I had been finishing on second and third positions but this time the grass was smooth and it made my playing easier.

“I also salute Sparc Systems for supporting golf and fabulous prizes. I also had a wonderful time with my playing partners,” she said.

In subsidiary prizes, Furkani Gani hit the longest drive on hole number 2 in men’s category while Bose Kamphulusa won the women’s equivalent on hole 8.

Charles Merrick shot nearest to the pin on hole number 1.

Wisely Phiri, Managing Director for the sponsors Sparc System Limited, a leading multi-product system integration company operating in Malawi and across Africa, said they were proud that a good day of golf was enjoyed by all, which was their sole intention.

“We wanted to interact with our clients in a convivial environment and we are so glad that the golfers had a wonderful day.

“We also sponsored another golf tounament early this year and we promised to return. So, this is our fulfilment of our pledge,” he said.
