Sheik Kanyamula, Malawi Muslim leader dies

Former Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) National Chairman Sheikh Yusuf Kanyamula has died.

Kanyamula who until his death was a member of MAM Board of Trustees died in the wee hours of Monday 2 March, 2015.

The Sheikh , who served as member of Public Affairs Committee and translated Holy Quran from Arabic to Chichewa, who died at his home in Liwonde of a heart attack.

He will be remembered for doing a lot of good work for Islam in the country including translation of many Islamic literatures

Kanyamula has also been doing Dawah as well as some programmes on Radio Islam which have brought unity among Muslims in Malawi.

“His wise counsel made him a truly significant figure,” one Moslem told Nyasa Times

“He was enormously respected and he himself respected everyone.”

Brie bio: Kanyamula once worked for Road Traffic and he was arrested for drug trafficking, kugulisa chamba ku Zimbabwe and put into penitetiary where he was converted to islam whilst in cell. we will remember him for translating the quoran into the language many Malawian can understand.RIP Shiek bismilah wahid

    And may the Khalifs preach true peace as taught by the prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him)/Sheikh Kanyamula and not the religious innuendos, provocations and violence we see today at dhawaas etc.

  92. Kanyamula was indeed a great man. I remember working with him at road trafic many many years back. He was from Ntchisi, a chewa like me “akwathu.” He converted to Islam and went on to become one of the most influential muslim leaders in the country. he translated many books to chichewa and used to run an organisation (was it called Mazeze Islamic organisation? he shared some of these books with me. one correction: Kanyamula will be buried Kumudzi (Ntchisi) near the district hospital, tomorrow at 11 oclock.

  107. To be buried today as per Islamic laws. It is good that these people are in minority otherwise all non-moslems would feel them. Killings is what they know. Roy was hacked to death in Bangladesh and two weeks ago 21 Coptic Christians from Egypt were burn alive. Last year poke was banned in Mangochi. We give them too much respect as Christians here but they don’t in the Arab world and northern Nigeria.
