Sidelining of Vice-President Ansah continues as Mutharika sends Chihana to SADC Summit

The apparent sidelining of First Vice-President Jane Ansah continues to raise questions within Malawi’s political circles after President Peter Mutharika assigned Second Vice-President Enock Chihana to represent him and the country at a major regional summit in South Africa.

Chihana will represent Mutharika and Malawi at the 46th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for August 17 2026 in South Africa.

Foreign Affairs Minister George Chaponda has confirmed that Chihana will represent Malawi at the regional gathering and engage with other Southern African leaders on the country’s behalf.

The latest assignment puts Chihana at the centre of Malawi’s regional diplomacy while Ansah, the country’s First Vice-President, will not represent the President at the high-level SADC meeting.

The development comes against the backdrop of growing questions over the visibility and role of Ansah within the Mutharika administration.

Under normal political expectations, the First Vice-President would be viewed as a natural choice to undertake major assignments on behalf of the President when the Head of State is unavailable.

Instead, Mutharika has entrusted the assignment to his Second Vice-President.

The choice is likely to fuel further debate over the working relationship between Mutharika and Ansah and the precise political responsibilities being accorded to the First Vice-President.

For Chihana, however, the assignment gives him another prominent opportunity to represent Malawi on the regional stage.

The SADC summit is expected to focus on regional integration, trade, peace and security, and broader development priorities affecting Southern Africa.

Chihana is expected to deliver Malawi’s position and engage other regional leaders on matters of importance to the country.

But beyond the summit agenda, the President’s decision is likely to attract attention at home for another reason: it adds to the growing perception that Malawi’s First Vice-President is being kept away from some of the administration’s most visible assignments.

The question now is whether Chihana’s appointment is simply an administrative decision—or another indication of a widening political distance between Mutharika and his First Vice-President.

For now, State House has chosen the Second Vice-President for the SADC assignment.

And once again, Jane Ansah is not the one standing alongside the President on one of the region’s most important diplomatic stages.
