Silver bag first league points…Tigers hunt down Civo: Malawi TNM Super League
After suffering two consecutive defeats in their opening fixtures of the 2015 TNM Super League season, Silver Strikers FC finally put smiles on their supporters’ faces on Sunday, May 3, 2015 after crashing a resilient Mzuzu University (Mzuni) 2-0 in an entertaining match played before a sizeable crowd at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe’s Area 47.
As the central bankers deposited their first points of the campaign, their city rivals Civo United failed to impress yet again, having succumbed to a challenge by visiting Azam Tigers, who grabbed a 1-0 victory at Civo Stadium in Area 9.
Willy Saenda claimed the lone goal for Tigers after getting to the end of a Bright Munthali goal-bound effort as Civo defenders failed to deal with a corner kick.
The civil servants tried all they could to level the scores but Tigers’ custodian Nenani Juwaya and his defenders were not in compromising mood.
Tigers’ coach Gerald Phiri Snr said he was happy to get a second win on the road after grabbing full points against Airborne Rangers at Chitowe Stadium two weeks ago.
“It is not easy to get three points away from home. I thank the boys for playing according to game plan. The best defence is to attack the opponent- that was our strategy today,” said Phiri, who has now managed seven points from four games.
It was disappointment in Civo’s camp where coach Oscar Kaunda lamented some missed scoring opportunities by his charges.
“We had a lot of scoring opportunities but we squandered all the chances. However, our followers should not lose hope- we will give them a result in our next game,” said Kaunda, whose side has collected only a single point from three league assignments.
At Silver, a stone-throw away from Civo, Green Harawa opened the score-sheet for Silver with a hard drive from the edge of the box after the students had restricted the Bankers to a goalless first half.
The bankers were two-up after 67 minutes- courtesy of a Peter Wadabwa cool finish after Mzuni goalkeeper Klilipota Thole had fumbled a Harawa free kick.
The result means both Silver and Mzuni have three points each, having managed a single victory from their opening assignments. Mzuni got their first points after shocking Epac 1-0 at Civo Stadium on Saturday.
