Silver beat champs KB: Malawi TNM Super League

Silver Strikers on Sunday had to leave it late to strike twice through substitute Michael Tethe in the last five minutes to collect maximum points after beating TNM Super League defending champions,Kamuzu Barracks (KB) 2-0 at Civo stadium in Lilongwe.

The bankers have moved from 15th position to 11th with five points from three games and have recorded their first win of the season following their two away draws against Premier Bet Wizard and Azam Tigers.

Kamuzu Baracks have recorded their second defeat of the season after they were hammered 0-1 by Mighty Be Forward Wanderers during the open game at Bingu National Stadium in LIlongwe.

Hero of the day was Ghanian striker,Tethe who came in as a substitute for Green Harawa in the 57th minute.

With five minutes to time, Tethe finished a loose ball in the penalty box after Kamuzu Barracks second choice keeper Bondage Lweya had fumbled Levson Magazine’s effort.

At dot of full time Tethe received a through ball and he outpaced two kamuzu Barack’s central defenders Vincent Mphepo and Sam Chibvunde before he effort was parried by Lweya then he slot in the loose ball to make it 2-0.

The first half was so passive with not clear cut chanced from both sides. The only chance came in through Kamuzu Barracks Kelvin Hanganda after he had volleyed past Silver’s custodian Brighton Munthali but his sole effort was cleared by Herbert Wayekha on the goal mouth.

The second half saw Kamuzu Barracks bringing in Wonderful Timeyo for injured Hanganda.

Kamuzu Barracks Douf Simaone threatened to open the score sheet in the 52 minute but his hard and low went off target.

The Bankers made a double substitution by bringing in Tethe and Duncan Nyoni for Harawa and Thuso Paipi respectively and the move paid dividend.

Silver continued to mount pressure on Kamuzu Barracks as their play centred in the midfield where Young Chimodzi Jnr and Maganizo dominated play. Harvey Mkacha was completely out played in the process.

Kamuzu Barracks tried to launch some attacks through Davie Chisambi but he lacked support upfront to unlock Silver’s defence.

The race for the title is now on as Blantyre giants Nyasa Bullets and Wanderers have recorded their wins over Mzuni 2-0 and Wizard 1-0 respectively.
