Silver reclaim top spot: A point away from Malawi league title

Defending TNM Super League champions Silver Strikers on Sunday, December 22, 2013 reclaimed the top spot on the league’s log table after labouring to a 1-0 victory over relegated Evirom FC in a tight throat affair at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe’s Area 47.

Prior to the match, there was some tough talk from Evirom coach Mario Gadaga, who declared his side was coming to the capital to collect maximum points.

Those that thought the Evirom mentor was just joking were proved wrong from the start as the boys from Ndirande took the game to the defending champions much to the delight of ganyu fans.

The ganyu faithful were, however, dealt a severe blow after 18 minutes when Silver’s midfielder Ndaziona Chatsalira headed the ball home after Blessings Tembo had taken a free kick.

The bankers had an opportunity to extend the lead on 33 minutes when Fifa referee Jones Makuwira awarded them a penalty following a foul on striker Chawangangwa Kaonga. From the penalty spot, midfielder Frank Banda skied the ball over the cross-bar.

The second half saw searching for a second goal but Evirom’s defence and goalkeeper Blessings Kamiza frustrated their efforts. At one time Kamiza had to be fixed with a bandage around his head after colliding with Green Harawa’s leg.

The Evirom goalkeeper was deservedly named man-of-the match after the final whistle. He received various items including a TNM branded umbrella from league sponsors Telekom Networks Malawi.

Speaking in an interview after the match, Gadaga said he was proud of his boys despite the loss.

“I am not disappointed. The boys put up a very good fight and we have given the home side a good run for their
money. We are going back to the premier division but we will meet again in 2015,” he declared.

His counterpart Stain Chirwa conceded Evirom gave his side a torrid afternoon.

“It was a tough game. Evirom came to prove a point that although they are relegated, they are a good side and they have just done that. Our focus will now be on the last game against Wanderers, which will be like a cup final for us.

“Although we just need a draw, we will go there (Balaka) to win,” said Chirwa, whose side now tops the league’s standings with 50 points from 27 games.
