Silver’s ban over as Wanderers upbeat of causing misery: Malawi TNM Super League

The battle for points in the TNM Super League continues this weekend with the defending champions, Silver Strikers likely returning to their base after serving a six-month ban from using their home ground, Silver stadium.

The bankers were banned in February this year after being found guilty following the violence that erupted on February 9, 2013 during a TNM super league match between them and Epac FC.

Some of their supporters including Nowa Rodgers ad Dan Mhango were also fined K150,000 each and ordered not to take part in any football and related activities for a period of six for invading the pitch.

As such, the Lilongwe based outfit have been playing their home games at Civo stadium, official home to their archrivals, Civo United.

They are returning to their base with a tricky fixture against Mighty Wanderers, who on paper have an edge over the bankers.

Mighty Wanderers are traveling to the central region as favourites considering that they impressively ended unbeaten run of military side Red Lions and Azam Tigers.

However, the bankers’ General Secretary Mike Tembo said their Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Epac FC, after playing six competitive games without scoring a goal, was a morale booster ahead of Saturday’s game.

Tembo warned Wanderers not to underrate them, saying that they have exorcised ‘bad spells’ that engulfed the bankers for the past weeks.

“We are equally prepared for the encounter. And the coming in of captain Lucky Malata, who was in South Africa for trials, is also a morale booster.

“Yes, we always struggle with Mighty Wanderers but this is another game and our best arsenal is readily available for the showdown this Saturday,” said Tembo.

On his part, Wanderers General Secretary David Kanyenda assured nomads fans that they should not panic as their team, which is also serving a ban for causing violence in game against Blue Eagles at Kamuzu stadium, will collect maximum points, come Saturday.

Kanyenda said although history does not matter in the game of football, the nomads have a good track record over the bankers.

He therefore urged their supporters in the capital and surrounding areas to cluster and welcome the team Friday afternoon at Bunda Turn-off.

Kanyenda also disclosed that the clubs officials will be at Silver stadiumSaturday morning to process supporter identification cards for the Nomads loyalists at a fee of K1000.
