SOBO employee jailed 10 years for sexual assault

The Karonga Magistrate Court has sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour a former employee of Southern Bottlers (Sobo) after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a three year old girl (name withheld) at Baka Township in Karonga, northern Malawi.

The convict, Sammie Nyirenda, pleaded not guilty to defilement contrary to section 138 (1) of the penal code but the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt the case against him.

Interestingly, the girl is a daughter to Nyirenda’s neighbour. At the time of arrest Nyirenda was working as a Fork Lift Operator at Karonga SOBO depot.

Evidence presented in court revealed that on July 21st, 2011, Nyirenda found the young girl playing outside his house and he grabbed her into his house and defiled her.

On that day Nyirenda’s wife had gone to Chitipa.

First Grade Magistrate Patrick Khamisa said although the convict had pleaded not guilty, there was overwhelming evidence to suggest otherwise.

“The little girl has been damaged both physically and psychologically. She will have to live with that for the rest of her life,” he said.

Still in northern Malawi, Rumphi police arrested a 41-year-old man Peter Kayira for allegedly impregnating his 12-year-old stepdaughter,

Rumphi Police spokesperson Victor Khamisi claimed the girl was sexually abused from February to April this year.

Khamisi also claimed that Kayira’s son, John (20), had also allegedly started abusing the 12-year-old.

Defilement is contrary to Section 138 Subsection 1 of the Penal Code and attracts a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
