Some parts of Malawi declared to belong to Zambia: Minister urges people not to change nationality

Parts of Mchinji, Mzimba, Kasungu and Rumphi districts have been declared to belong to Zambia during the border re-demarcation exercise.

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Jean Kalilani told Parliament in a ministerial statement that the physical demarcation of border lines started on a pilot basis in 1993 and boundary inspections have been carried since then.

Kalilani advised Malawians residing in the affected areas against changing their nationalities from Malawi to Zambia.

The Minister said the government of Zambia and Malawi had agreed that until a new border treaty come into effect, local people should remain where they were before the demarcation.

“The two governments will agree on the way forward after receiving all the reports on the exercise, including a report on the impact assessment study. I, therefore, propose that the affected people should maintain their nationality and be allowed to register upon verification by local leaders,” said Kalilani.

People living near the Malawi-Zambia Border in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chindi in Mzimba have been living in fear due to a wrangle with their Zambian counterparts over border re-demarcation exercise.

The wrangle affected learning, as some chiefs allege that Zambians destroyed Byembye Primary School which was initially in Malawi but is now in Zambia after the re-demarcation.

Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V pleaded with government to intervene in the matter.

According to Kalilani, the Zambia and Malawi governments have put in place a strategy to meet regularly and resolve any emerging issues while the exercise is taking place.

  8. This is the problem of Politicians. Along the border people have lived peacefully since time immemorial. The two government would have used Surveyors only but Traditional Chiefs were to be involved in the demarcation process because the latter know the boundaries better than the former. Late Kamuzu used to threat Zambian Govt that Malawi Borders would go as far as Lundazi if Zambia provokes him. Now, no leader can protect his people and their land.

  14. NO! NO! NO! NO! It doesn’t work like that! It can’t be true. All these years it should be known only now that part of Malawi belongs to another country?? This government will sell us out. It is full of idiots who say “yes ” to any no sense, they hear. Can someone tell how they reached to this declaration, please, and if it correct what part of Zambia, is declared Malawi”s?

    1. This is tragic, to say the least. The ONLY live boundary dispute is the one we have with the United Republic of Tanganyika (and by the way, this is the official name of modern day Tanzania). A minor, inconsequential boundary preoccupation related to the shifting boundaries along the Songwe River (ably resolved under the technical leadership of the late Surveyor-General Tambala in the mid eighties).
      This is not a matter for the Ministry of Lands or Chiefs! We have international law and regional law norms under the OAU Treaty which is why we ourselves, as a sovereign and I daresay proud and gallant people, have purposely and advisedly refrained from asserting any expansionist territorial claims (which we could have done and which the late Ngwazi KAMUZU Banda rhetorically referred to!)
      It is not long ago when Malawi’s economy supported those of Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia along the very same border areas. Any argument premised on economic comparison is patently misplaced and fickle.
      Any territorial claims against Malawi will be challenged vigorously.

  16. Since 1993 you cant finish the demarcation of your land to make sure your voters are safe. Shame on our governments. The problem we don’t know what to prioritize. We put politics first and the citizens come last. OOOHH and if Chilima can mention in the next rally, then next week you will quickly resolve.

  17. Kwa inu amene simukhala ku border khalani chete. Zambia is much better than Malawi. Ask us from the western District. Almost every village in Mchinji has a relative in Zambia and none for the vice versa. Why? Because pipo go where there is better life. I will be happy if the whole district MC was part of Zambia. There is plenty of land for farming and their education system is much better. And corruption there is only 1% of Malawi.

      1. Am a zambian from petauke but lives in Lusaka. This new demarcation of the borderline is not only news to me but quiet sad because we seem to be fighting amongst ourselves. This should not take away our “ubuntu.” We are a one people with one leg in each others land. No one country is out doing the other here. The feelings are cosmetic and you will realise that politicians who are a great disappointment are not addressing all this misunderstanding with the Vernon it deserves. Lets shame them by remaining united and say NO to this no sense.

Remember , when Joyce Banda was leading Malawi nation , Tanzania claim part of our lake in Karonga belong to them and then Peter Muntharika said that once voted into power as president he will end this claims and bring back that claimed part to Malawians saying that the whole lake belong to us.My question is ; has he done that ?after 4 solid years in office as president, there is nothing so far done ,in short he has failed, what we hear is that there are negotiatons, mediations this and that 4 solid years has collapse nothing on the ground has been done yes he promised Malawians during his campaign that he will bring back the lake in only a week of his office time and so bad so worse we are talking of loosing part of Kasungu, Mchinji, Mzimba and Rumphi to Zambia what is this now ? where is Malawi going? what are the responsibilities of these leaders ? Is it to protect Malawi or giving Malawi to Neighbouring countries, Can someone make me to understand these issues please ,I am not understand it .Why they are busy sleeping while Malawi is being taken by our neighbouring countries?
