Sparks fly in Presidential Netball Cup, Waya returns to action

Former Malawi Queens’s evergreen shooter, Mary ‘Atcheya’ Waya returned to action on Thursday when she inspired her club, MTL Queens to secure two victories on Thursday, in the K30 million Presidential Netball Cup at Blantyre Youth Centre.

Waya, who was in Tanzania with the Taifa Queens as coach, was a marvel to watch in their first game against Cider, as she led her side to a 38-11 baskets victory.

Still evergreen and skilful, Waya co-ordinated well with young and upcoming players like Thandiwe
Magaleta, Riyana Mtenje as she went into scoring spree.

MTL also featured some vast experienced players like Sylvia-Malenga Mtetemera and Kelita Hau with no nonsense Joana Kachilika playing as a goal defender.

In their second encounter, MTL Queens demolished the Salima based soldiers, Mafco FC 31-19 baskets.

During this match, it was Waya again, who was all over notching in more baskets comparing with any other players.

Waya told Nyasa Times that she was happy to back to her base after missing in action for some months.

“I am so happy because this is the team which has brought me where l am. We are determined to reach the finals and grab the cup,” said Waya.

In other matches, Escom Sisters, who are also the cup holders, walloped Paradine 47-13 before another victory to Mimosa 40-5.

Escom Sisters mentor, Griffin ‘Zagalo’ Saenda  said he was confident his charges will defend the title.

Bingu Tigresses, who struggled in the first quarter went on to win 44-21 baskets after clipping Civonets 34-20 in their first game.

Bingu Tigresses coach, Charles Mhango was satisfied with the performance of his players  and vowed to conquer in their next assignments on Friday.

“Nothing will stop us to grab this cup this year. We have the right crop of players who will take us all the way to the finals,” said Mhango.

Blue Eagles Sisters were victors against Mzuzu Queens having won 31-16 baskets.

Over 700 teams took part since the inception of the cup nationwide.

The winning teams will carter a whooping of K4 million with the loosing finalist going home with K2 million.
