Speeding vehicle kills five people

A 56-year-old truck driver is expected to appear in court to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving after he run over five people, killing three on the spot while two died at hospital.

Police say the driver, Juma Namakhuwa, of TA Nsamala in Balaka District caused the accident around 7.00pm on Tuesday at a Chitsulo village along the Salima M5 road located between Bwanje and Bilira Trading Centers in Ntcheu District due to over speeding.

Ntcheu Police Spokesperson Sergeant Gift Matewere said the front liner truck, belonging to Chimalira Enterprises, registration number NU 6436, was carrying bales of sugar and heading towards Balaka when the accident took place.

“He was over speeding and upon reaching the accident scene, he lost control of the vehicle and went on to hit the five people. Three died on the spot while the other died upon arrival at the hospital,” said the police spokesperson.

Matewere explained that the fifth person died Wednesday at Ntcheu District Hospital where he was admitted to.

All the five deceased came from Chitsulo Village in the area of TA Ganya in the district, according to Matewere.
