Speeding vehicle kills kabaza operator in Balaka

A speeding vehicle on Wednesday hit and killed a Kabaza (bicycle taxi) operator in Balaka.

The vehicle, registration number MC 3680, which was coming from the direction of Liwonde Township heading towards Balaka was being driven by Charity Chizalema, 52.

Confirming the accident in an interview, Balaka Police Station Deputy Publicist, Gerald Sumaili, said the accident occurred at Mpulula.

“The vehicle which was over speeding swerved to the extreme roadside after the driver lost control of it. When it swerved, it hit two pedal cyclists in a row namely; Smith Wilson, 49, and James Allan, 20, before it rested on a shrub in the extreme offside of the road,” said Sumaili.

Wilson sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead upon reaching Balaka District Hospital while Allan together with Chizalema, who was the driver of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and were both treated as outpatients.

Meanwhile, Balaka Police is reminding drivers to observe speed limits all the time and always be conscious of other road users to avoid such road accidents.

The deceased hailed from Dulani Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Nsamala in Balaka.
