Standard Bank of Malawi treats business journalists

Standard Bank has commended the role of the Malawi media in disseminating vital information on the bank’s role in the country’s economy.

Head of Personal and Business Banking Margaret Kubwalo-Chaika said when the bank hosted editors and senior journalists to a luncheon at Blantyre’s up-market Atmosphere Restaurant Friday that media is an important partner of the bank.

“Our partnership with media continues to grow from strength to strength and is also supported by our admiration of the brilliant works by individual journalists,” she said.

Kubwalo-Chaika said the support Standard Bank receives from media has helped the bank become a market leader in Malawi and a major catalyst in economic development.

“This year is especially important as the bank will be hosting a Mining Conference that aims to unleash Malawi’s natural resources potential.  Last year, we hosted the Power conference, and now are moving to the next important frontier as we continue to move Malawi forward,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the editors, Association of Business Journalists (ABJ) Deputy National Coordinator Aubrey Mchulu thanked Standard Bank for continuing to support journalists in the country.

Mchulu said the bank has been providing technical and financial support to business journalists through sponsorship of ABJ’s activities, training and exchange programs and familiarisation visits to its Johannesburg head office.

“Standard Bank is a very close partner of the media. There are numerous initiatives that the bank working with its agency, FD Communications Ltd, undertakes with the objective of uplifting the media industry and further harnessing business relations,” said Mchulu, who is also Deputy Editor at Malawi’s flagship daily, The Nation.

Brand Quiz and all that Jazz

Apart from the luncheon, the bank treated the journalists to a cocktail party on the mezzanine deck of its Blantyre Regional office that offers the breath-taking aerial views of Mt Soche Hotel and Blantyre’s lush green mountains.

During the party, the bank dished out K200,000 worth of shopping vouchers to outstanding participants of a brand quiz about Standard Bank’s 45 years in Malawi.

“This was a fantastic evening. A Friday night well spent,” said revered international correspondent and columnist Raphael Tenthani, and who also won a shopping voucher after scoring in  a Joy of Jazz question.

Tenthani is a jazz die hard and leaves everything behind to follow Standard Bank’s Joy of Jazz concerts in Lilongwe every September. The concert has so far featured South Africa’s Zahara and America’s jazz maestro and Grammy-award winner  Earl Klugh.
