Stuck on the tarmac road

Stuck!

Despite President Bingu wa Mutharika’s claims to have developed the country beyond decognition, Malawi is still struggling with poor infrastructure and outdated delivery systems of utilities such as electricity, water and telephones.

As if to pin-point these challenges, there was panic on Tuesday in Limbe Township as motorists were forced to divert to other roads after a minibus and a truck were stuck on a tarmac road linking Blantyre city centre and Limbe.

This was due to carelessness by workers from fixed phone services provider, MTL who dug a tunnel on a surface of the road to repair some erratic cables.

After doing the repairs, the technicians just covered the whole area without proper back up from the city council to permanently seal the affected area.

With the heavy rains the road was impassable and eventually the two vehicles got stuck.

Many resident and road users in the city say they are concerned with the conduct of utility companies like water board who dig up places where they want to work without properly sealing them which poses danger to the public.
