Surestream closes Malawi football academy
A big blow to Malawi football, as British petroleum firm, Surestream has decided to close the trailblazing Surestream Football Academy in the country after four years of operation.
The academy situated in formally MDC stadium in Chilomoni, in the commercial city of Blantyre was established to develop football from grassroots level; provide football education as well as health-related lessons vital to the football game.
Surestream Petroleum Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Pitman had promised to build players’ residences and classrooms in which they will continue their school and college lessons.
But the British firm which came to explore oil in Lake Malawi, Surestream Petroleum, said on Monday it was closing the academy.
“It is with no small measure of regret that Surestream Petroleum has decided to close the Surestream Football Academy after four years of operation,” a statement from Surestream signed Keith Robinson said.
Surestream said it has closed the academy because the company is no longer the operator of the licence for exploration for any oil exploration blocks in Malawi.
“And this, coupled with the ever decreasing price of oil in the world markets has led the Company to the unavoidable decision to close the Academy,” the statement said.
Instead the company has offered their heartfelt thanks to all their supporters over the last four years, in particular the Football Association of Malawi for their unwavering support over the lifetime of the Academy.
They also thanked the Ministry of Sport and Youth Development for their vision and championing of the concept of a Youth Academy in the early days of its development.
“We genuinely could not have operated the academy without the unequivocal support of those organisations. As part of our legacy to Malawi Football we will return the former MDC stadium to FAM in superb condition. It is now unarguably one of the best small stadiums in Malawi.
“ Surestream have invested well in excess of USD 250,000 in its restoration and upkeep. The company feel honoured to have been the custodians of the facility for so long. We sincerely hope it will be maintained in its current condition to the exclusive benefit of Malawi Football. Once again, on behalf of all at Surestream offer our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the support of all of the Malawi people,” the company said.
Surestream has unearthed many talents from Levisoni Maganizo, Brighton Munthali, Ernest Tambe just to mention a few.
