Susan Mtegha, 24 crowned Miss Malawi, Mzuzu dominates

Two contestants from Mzuzu city scooped top positions in the Miss Malawi 2011 contest with Susan Mtegha being crowned the top beauty queen of the southern African nation.

A Diploma in Business Information Systems, Mtegha of Mzuzu beat thirteen other contestants in the wee hours of Saturday to win the title in a glamorous pageant that took place at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe.

The 24-year-old will be deputised by Mayamiko Msosa, 22  (from Lilongwe) and Jacqueline Chimkwita-Phiri, 19, (from Mzuzu) who were crown the First and Second Princess, respectively.

Charity

Mtegha told Nyasa Times soon after being crowned that she was so excited to win the crown and that she will reward Malawians for choosing her through “lots of charity work.”

“There have been a lot of Miss Malawi who have done nothing, but I promise I’ll make a difference. I will work hand in hand with organisers to achieve my dream,” she said in an interview with Nyasa Times.

Mtegha said one of her main focuses will be working hand in hand with the “responsible ministry to fight deforestation in the country.”

Family tree

A fashion designer and dancer, the new beauty queen is a cousin to former Miss Malawi Perth Msiska who was also in attendance at the event.

In a separate interview, Msiska said she was proud of her cousin and  that her family had re-taken the crown of the Miss Malawi office.

To win the title, Mtegha who was given K500,000, among the valuable prizes, convinced a panel of five judges who comprised Marjorie Machinjiri, Bridget Mkumba, Bruno Kalemba, Qabaniso Malewezi and Hazel Warren.

One of the organisers Mable Khonje of Vogue said she was “pleased” with the outcome and the contest.
