Teen vegetable vendor robs witchdoctor, surrenders himself to Police

Fear of being bewitched has forced a 19-year-old boy, Shema Kaponda to surrender himself to Dowa police after realizing he had robbed a witch-doctor on Tuesday this week.

Kaponda, a vegetable vendor, hails from Matola village, T/A Nsamala in Balaka is currently in police custody waiting court trial on theft charges.

Dowa police Public Relations Officer, Kondwani Kandiado disclosed in an interview with Nyasa Times that Kaponda on Tuesday evening stole a Hunters bicycle worth K35, 000 and a bag belonging to herbalist, Ansah Kanzimbi at a pub in Mponela.

“The herbalist was at the Shabeen Bottle store and had packed his bicycle outside; Kaponda noticing that the owner was inside busying drinking with no one on the watch, he decided to steal it and cycled home. But while riding home, he claimed to have been seeing a K200 note on the way but he could not manage to pick it,” explained Kandiado.arrest

The police publicist said whilst home, Kaponda realized the bicycle belonged to a witchdoctor after opening the bag that was on its carrier.

“He said the bag was full of herbs and some magic wands and other charms. Upon seeing such stuff, he decided to surrender himself to the police, and we have managed to find the owner, Mr. Kanzimbi. During interrogations, the boy said he wanted to use the stolen bicycle for her business errands”.
