Tembo advises JB to repeal bad laws, pledges MCP support

Leader of Opposition and president of Malawi Congress Party (MCP), John Tembo has advised newly installed President, Her Excellency Joyce Banda to prioritise repealing of all draconian laws passed by DPP led government.

The veteran politician laments that Malawians have been subjected to the worst kind of laws that impinge on their rights.

“Her Excellency Banda needs to make it her first assignment that all bad laws are corrected,” he told an independent radio Zodiak.

Some of these bad laws include injunctions which bars ordinary citizens from suing government or officials, police bill which among others gives powers to police to search without warrant and Section 46 which impinges on freedoms of the media to publish.

The leader of opposition in parliament has also pledged to support the female president in the national assembly to enable government pass crucial bills

“Banda’s Peoples Party has no numbers in parliament to pass bills and MCP will give them support, ” he explained.

Her Excellency Banda was sworn in Saturday to become Malawi’s first female president, replacing 78-year-old Bingu wa Mutharika who died from cardiac arrest on Thursday.

And when Mutharika died on Thursday, government went into a panic mode as DPP politburo members did not want to hand over power to Banda, a virtual opposition leader.
