Tembo condemns Mponela bed-gate scam: ‘Resign now!’

Malawi opposition chief, John Tembo, has strongly condemned the bed-snatching  saga at Mponela Rural Hospital benefiting Mzimba, which is Vice-President and Health Minister Khumbo Kachali’s home district.

Speaking on Zodiak Radio’s News Night programme on Friday, Tembo  said he was against the transfer of hospital beds from Dowa to Mzimba districts, calling the move as “stupid”.

He also demanded the resignation of  the responsible authority who made the decision to stand down.

Tembo: That was stupid

“What happened in Mponela was stupid and wrong. I therefore expect whosoever made that decision to step down because s/he is not fit to be minister of health,” fumed Tembo.

Ironically, the health ministry is being headed by vice president Khumbo Kachali and her deputy Halima Daudi.

However, Kachali distanced himself from the saga saying he did not know anything about the removal of the beds and swiftly instituted an investigation to probe the scam.

The transfer of beds from Dowa to Mzimba  triggered controversy when the media continue to report on the clandestine nature of the operation—moving the items at night; unclear instructions and the political timing  as beds were destined to Mzimba, the home of Kachali where there are by-elections on October 9.

Kachali was censured for the saga by the media  and urged to be sensitive, respectful and show empathy at a time people are going through rough times in the economy.
