Theft of fuel coupons worries Malawi Finance minister
Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe has conceded there is a syndicate involving drivers and others involved in issuance of fuel coupons that is conniving with petrol attendants to sell fuel coupons.
“We know that the government fuel coupons are being put to wrong use,” said Gondwe.
Government drivers and other officials involved in fuel connive with fuel attendants in filling stations where the fuel coupons are sold and fuel not put in government vehicles, another form of common theft in government offices.
Gondwe said Capital Hill is aware of the common theft and has put in place measures to catch the thieves and put the malpractice to a stop.
“We will not stop the coupon system but we will catch those involved,” said Gondwe who described this as sensitive but the government will deal with the matter.
It is feared that ambulance and police vehicle drivers might be involved in the malpractice, rendering the public service down.
