Thugs attack Aford official in Rumphi: Malawi Police arrest two

Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) deputy district governor for Rumphi, Newton Harawa is battling for his life at Livingstonia hospital after severely attacked by thugs suspected to be the party’s president Enoch Chihana rough necks.

According to the victim, the incidence occurred around 8 pm on Friday on his way home from a nearby trading center, known as Lura.

Harawa told Nyasa Times that he received a call from Chihana’s personal assistant and driver on Friday morning that they will kill him on the day because of not supporting his boss and his allegiance forKaronga central legislature, Frank Mwenifumbo.

“Chihana’s driver phoned me saying they will kill me for working against his boss. I did not report the matter to police because I thought he was not serious. Ironically, around 8 pm when I was going home from a nearby trading center, I saw six unknown people carrying sharp weapons and started beating me for almost an hour,” said Harawa.

He said the thugs used a vehicle, Toyota Ipsyum registration number RU 1020.

However, he said he was saved by a group of people from within the community who were also going to their respective home from the trading center.

“I was saved by some community members who managed to catch two of the suspects and detained the vehicle. We referred the two suspects to Ntchenachena police but the vehicle was packed at my home waiting  to be taken by the law enforcers,” he disclosed.

According to Harawa, he was referred to Lura health center soon after the incidence but was later sent to Livingstonia hospital for further treatment by the health officials.

When asked for a comment, Chihana said Harawa is just fine and that no such incidence has occurred to him.

“That’s not true. Harawa is just fine and I was talking to him recently. He has not said anything like that to me,” said Chihana.

However, Harawa denied talking to Chihana saying “he is lying, I have not talked to him and I don’t want because I suspect him to be behind the whole attack. He is angry with me because of the petition we presented to the office of the DC on Thursday against his silence on the fracas that happened in Lilongwe.”

On Monday, the party’s secretary General Christopher Ritchie and regional governor for the centre Nicholas Kamoto were also assaulted by Chihana’s driver and bodyguard during the party management meeting organized by Chihana in Lilongwe.

The two were ordered by the court not to attend political rallies and involved in such circumstances after spent two days in police cell.
