Telekom Networks Malawi Limited (TNM) on Monday conducted final draw of the Wali Wali ndi Mpamba promotion with 30 customers who used Mpamba Mobile Money Service for electricity bill payments and electricity unit’s purchase, emerging as final winners.

During the 15-weeks competition, a total of 450 customers emerged winners with half of them pocketing the main prize of K15,000 each worth of electricity vouchers or having bills-not above K15,000-paid for through Mpamba Mobile Money Service, which is a TNM product.

While the other half got a consolation prize of two free energy saver bulbs each provided for by Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) who were partners in the promotion.

Speaking after the final draw in Blantyre, TNM Business Development Manager, Earnest Kalomba disclosed that about 23,874 customers had qualified for the competition after using a minimum of K1, 000 in paying bills or buying electricity units through Mpamba.

“As of 14th draw, there were 2, 476 transactions of bill payments or electricity units purchase. And the 15th draw witnessed 2, 706 transactions representing 10 percent growth. The rest of transactions were below K1, 000 which was the minimum entry point,” explained Kalomba.

Kalomba hailed the promotion to have eased Escom customers’ problems in accessing the utility provider’s services, adding through Mpamba Mobile Money Service the electricity bill payments or units purchase has been simplified.

Escom Business and Marketing Manager, Wiseman Chibwazi said Wali Wali ndi Mpamba promotion offered a relief to the company’s customers at it allowed people to access Escom services through mobile phones.

He said the competition has tripled number transactions people conduct with Escom, surpassing those made by commercial banks, adding it has helped the company to meet government policy which requires customers not to travel a distance of over 75 kilometres to access our service.

Chibwazi said as long term measure, Escom was planning to enrol all its customers on pre-paid service.

Wali Wali ndi Mpamba was designed for customers using the mobile money service in accessing ESCOM services through mobile phones.

To qualify, customers had to use a minimum of K1, 000 in paying bills or buying electricity units through Mpamba.

According to the design of the promotion, every Wednesday for 15 weeks 15 customers who pay bills or buy electricity vouchers through Mpamba were selected through a draw with winners getting K15,000 worth of electricity vouchers each or having their bills not above K15,000 paid for through Mpamba Mobile Money Service, which is a TNM product.
